Wellington poet Diana Bridge is the winner of the 2010 Lauris Edmond Award for Poetry.
The award, worth $1000, was to have been presented at the Press Christchurch Writers Festival in September, but the festival was cancelled following the September 4 earthquake.
Instead, Diana Bridge received the award during the New Zealand Poetry Society's November meeting in Wellington tonight [November 15].
The award recognises distinguished New Zealand poets. Bridge has published five books of poetry since 1996. The most recent, Aloe & Other Poems, was published last year by Auckland University Press.
The $1000 prize money is contributed jointly by the New Zealand Poetry Society and the Friends of Lauris Edmond. The recipient of the award is selected by the Friends Committee, made up of New Zealand Poetry Society president Laurice Gilbert, Frances Edmond (daughter of Lauris Edmond and her literary executive), Dame Fiona Kidman, Vincent O'Sullivan and Harry Ricketts.
Brian Turner, Dinah Hawken and Bill Sewell are previous winners of the Lauris Edmond Award.
