THIS is Miles Franklin Award week, so we'll see on Tuesday if Deborah Forster can add to her Dobbie Award for The Book of Emmett, announced earlier this month as this year's best first book by a woman.
Shirley Walker's The Ghost at the Wedding won the companion Kibble Award for best book, for which Josephine Emery (The Real Possibility of Joy) and Kristina Olsson (The China Garden) were also shortlisted.

If Tom Keneally, shortlisted for The People's Train, wins the Miles, he will be especially ebullient when he hosts a luxurious holiday weekend next month "under the stars" (that is, camping) in Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. This new-style holiday sounds pretty good: a writing lesson by Australia's grand old man of yarning a stone's throw from Uluru.
