Current writer-in-residence, Ben Brown, has been delighting Devonport audiences at Matariki events and poetry workshops over the past two weeks.
This Sunday he will join the Friends of the Michael King Writers’ Centre for an informal meet-the-author event. North Shore author Pam Laird will chat with Ben about his work, his experiences during the recent Canterbury earthquakes and his time at the centre.
Ben, who usually lives in Lyttelton, is known for his children’s books, non-fiction and for his short stories. He displays an “occasional propensity” toward performance poetry. Since 1992 he has collaborated with illustrator Helen Taylor on numerous publications. They won Best Picture Book at the 2006 New Zealand Post Children’s Book Awards.
Ben has been selected for Maori Writer’s Residency at the MKWC to work on a collection of poetry and short poetic-prose pieces that explore the concept of mana. He arrived at the centre in mid-May and is here on an eight-week residency supported by the MKWC and Te Waka Toi.
Born in Motueka, he has affiliations with the Waikato-Tainui (Ngati Paoa and Ngati Mahuta).
Join the Friends of the MKWC for a cuppa and a chat on Sunday afternoon.
