AUTHORS' CLUB 2011 DOLMAN TRAVEL BOOK OF THE YEAR SHORT LIST ANNOUNCEDIn a passionate judging debate held at the Authors' Club on Dean Street, the Dolman Travel book of the Year entries for 2011 were narrowed down to the following short list of six:
Drinking Arak off an Ayatollah's Beard by Nicolas Jubber (Da Capo Press)
Germania by Simon Winder (Picador)
Molotov's Magic Lantern by Rachel Polonsky (Faber)
Parisians by Graham Robb (Picador)
The Last Resort by Douglas Rogers (Shortbooks)
The Chairman of Judges, the author Giles Foden said: "Judging this prize has been a fascinating opportunity to think about what travel writing is, and we have been lucky in having some very good books to consider. All of the shortlisted titles move across space and tunnel through time in various configurations.
In all of them, too, there is a balance between actual travel narrative and other types of writing.
How elegantly this balance is managed was the principal point of discussion between the judges. We all look forward to reading them again and selecting a winner."
The 2011 Dolman Travel Book of the Year will be awarded on Wednesday 6th July at Hatchards on 187 Piccadilly from 6.30 - 9pm.
