In a month that has seen the hardest hitting names in literature and social and political commentary signing up for October's Ubud Writers & Readers Festival, we are proud to announce that Jose Ramos-Horta has agreed to feature across the main program of the Festival.
Recognised as one of the founders of the Republica Democratica de Timor- Leste, Ramos-Horta was its second president since independence from Indonesia was achieved, a position he held for five years until 20 May 2012. Said Festival founder and Director Janet de Neefe "The list of participants assembled for this our ninth.
Festival is startling. Every time I ponder its riches I am struck by the enormous scope and span of our vision. I can't wait for the conversations and dialogue to begin and our audiences will revel in the choices available. To present this charismatic and most venerable Nobel Peace Prize Laureate is simply the culmination of a dream and I know his In Conversation will draw huge Indonesian and international attention."
The UWRF program will once again fill Neka Museum with its mega set piece events, including the central session honouring the work and legacy of the great Pramoedya Ananta Toer and his impact on contemporary writing across the globe. Literary conversations will play out in the beautiful setting and verdant outlook of Indus, while the intimate Left Bank Lounge will host writerly discussions on the art, craft, process, purpose and seductive quality of the literary arts. These venues will be accessible with the UWRF Four Day Pass. Purchase the Pass, seize the program when published to the web and start circling the sessions of your choice. Jeni Caffin, UWRF International Program Director explained "That's when the hard choices are made. I cannot decide which sessions to recommend: I love them all. Should I tell you to sacrifice Jeffrey Eugenides in favour of dropping in on Nury Vittachi and Shamini Flint? Would you turn your back on Richard Glover and William McInnes to attend to Isobelle Carmody and Romesh Gunesekera? Could I bear to miss even a moment of Chang Rae-Lee? "
Full program details will be revealed at the end of August. It's worth the wait!
. Join us 3-7 October for the best conversations of the year: you won't have to say a word.
