A Brave Travel Writer Encounters Gargantuan Gators, Irksome Offspring, Lost Luggage, Murderous Mayonnaise and True Love

DEATH BY TARTAR SAUCE: A Brave Travel Writer Encounters Gargantuan Gators, Irksome Offspring, Lost Luggage, Murderous Mayonnaise and True Love

The title of Jules Older’s new e-book is a good indication of its contents. It is a rollicking read, a hilarious romp around a number of travel destinations. The book is as jam-packed as a travel writer’s carry-on bag and as rowdy as a carload of skiers heading up the mountain. The author loves travel and language, and he invites the reader to join in his delight. His pleasure is infectious and it is easy to get carried along by his punchy personal anecdotes. We witness his breadth of travel experience from his Caribbean wedding to his swamp nightmares. He captures a sense of the place well and celebrates it in exuberant prose.

Jules Older once lived in this country and New Zealand readers will smile at a glimpse of his time here, back when the first KFC outlet opened in their city. Jules currently divides his time between San Francisco, Auckland and a multitude of travel destinations, while still finding time to make regular appearances on Radio New Zealand’s Jim Mora Show.

Review by Margaret Ranger, author of The Riverbanks Remain and The Long Clear Day: Everyday Life in Aotearoa New Zealand.

All About Jules

Jules Older hangs out at http://julesolder.com. He opines about San Francisco restaurants and New Zealand life on the apps, San Francisco Restaurants and Auckland Insider. He films the world, in brief snatches, at YouTube/julesolder.

Jules writes… he writes a lot; kid’s books, adult books, medical articles, psychological articles, travel articles, opinion pieces and humor columns. He regularly speaks or has spoken on Radio New Zealand, Vermont Public Radio, KQED, KALW and the Australia Broadcasting Corporation. He’s taught medical students, writing students, impoverished college students, grade-schoolers, nurses, doctors and writers. His work has won major awards in Canada, Great Britain, New Zealand and the USA… though his all-time favorite is “Good Guy of the Month,” awarded him by the guests of Her Majesty’s Hotel, a.k.a. the involuntary residents of the New Zealand Women’s Prison.
This book of his has been edited by lifemate, fellow traveler and partner in crime, Effin Older. Jules and Effin travel the world in search of the delightful, the edible, the skiable, the strange. They've been from New England to New Zealand, New York to New South Wales, Britain to British Columbia. They've skied and snowboarded all over America, Canada, Scotland and New Zealand’s South Island, as well as fair chunks of France and Italy. They've eaten chitlins, gefilte fish, haggis, hakarl and muttonbird. (Effin didn’t eat the muttonbird. Or the haggis.) They once left 85 degrees in Puerto Rico to spend a night at 26-below in New Hampshire… in an unheated tent. And lived to tell the tale.
