Susan Holmes of Bookreps NZ
Ltd is delighted that a New Zealand bookshop has been announced the winner of
this year’s International Ivy and Bean display contest. Not only is Next PagePlease a New Zealand bookshop but it is a local one in Takapuna, Auckland.
Bookshops from around the world participated in the competition and a finalist
was selected from each country, with the overall winner taking away the global
grand prize: $1,000 USD to put toward a holiday party or event for their staff.
The displays were judged by
award winning San-Francisco based publisher Chronicle Books’ staff and Annie
Barrows, author of the hugely popular children’s book series Ivy and Bean. The
books follow the adventures – and disasters – created by Ivy and Bean; an
unlikely team of opposite characters. Chronicle say it was a tough competition
this year, but they were blown away by the window display created by Maria
Elston of Next Page Please (shown at top of post). The judges particularly loved the reviews of the
Ivy and Bean books written by children, which were incorporated into the
display by including them in the clouds (please see attached image)
“At the party we held for
International Ivy and Bean month, I read the last book in the series of 10,
‘Ivy and Bean Take the Case’ to a captive audience of 5-10 year olds. Their
comments about the book and others in the series were adorable and I wanted to
include them in my display,” says Maria Elston, owner of Next Page Please. “It
was an absolute pleasure and shock to find out that I won the competition! Many
thanks to Chronicle Books for the opportunity to further elevate this fun
series of books!”
With more than 2.5 million
copies sold worldwide, the children’s chapter series Ivy and Bean is a hit with
kids, teachers, parents and librarians. Annie Barrows is also the co-author of
the New York Times best-selling The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel
Society, but Ivy and Bean was her first book for kids.
