Publishers and the wider book trade have swung in behind the
prestigious New Zealand Children’s and Young Adults Book Awards.
Between them, Book Tokens Ltd, Copyright Licensing New
Zealand, Booksellers NZ, Nielsen Book and sponsor publishers Penguin Random
House, Hachette, Scholastic and Potton & Burton, as well as all publishers
who have finalists in the awards, have contributed $60,000 to ensure that the
awards go forward. On top of that is the very welcome ongoing support of
Creative New Zealand.
A private benefactor, the Fernyhough Education Foundation,
has also pledged support.
“We are enormously grateful for this support,” says New
Zealand Book Awards Trust chair Nicola Legat. “In a year where we do not have
sponsor it is a magnificent and heroic gesture and reflects the importance of
these awards to authors, publishers and booksellers.”
“The Trust is well placed to secure a sponsor for the 2016
award,” says Ms Legat, “and we have made the most of the opportunity to refocus
the awards and develop the potential of the Children’s Choice category. This
has put the awards on a sound and sustainable footing.”
The awards presentation is on Thursday 13 August at
Government House, Wellington, hosted by their Excellencies The Governor-General
of New Zealand Lt Gen The Rt Hon Sir Jerry Mateparae and Lady Janine Mateparae.
