When Riverhead Books acquired a thriller from an unknown British novelist last year, it seemed like a bit of a gamble. Foreign suspense novels don't always resonate with American readers, and the author, Paula Hawkins, was new to writing crime fiction. But the book had a lot going for it, mainly a mesmerizing plot fueled by three unreliable narrators, and Riverhead planned a healthy first print run of 40,000 copies.Seven months and 27 printings later, the novel, "The Girl on the Train," shows no signs of slowing.
