Last night
the Devonport community braved the cold to come out to celebrate the
publication of Terrain: Travels Through a Deep Landscape by Geoff Chapple. A
wonderful evening held at the Devonport Library, which was bursting at the
seams. Thanks to Paradox books for selling on the night and a huge thank you to
the Devonport Library Associates for making it such a special evening.
The book
was officially launched by Sir Bob Harvey, who claimed the book was an
exhilarating, powerful read. ‘This is the most dangerous book, the most
terrifying read. I would like to say to John Key that property values will
tumble because this not only travels through a very deep landscape, it travels
through a very dangerous landscape.
‘Geoff, who
we know has some terrific writing, travels down the Te Araroa — from top to
bottom — and along the way we are pulled as readers headlong into this journey.
It is a ripping read of history, destruction and absolute wonder.
‘Geoff is a
rock detective, he is clever and his research is brilliant. In the first five
pages you are hopelessly hooked. You are hooked in this landscape; you will
never look at a cliff again, or a headland or a volcano again.
‘As he
walks, Geoff has assembled this remarkable cast of characters and they are
great, great blokes. They are geologists, they are scientists, they are guys
that make home brew, they play cards and they cart Geoff everywhere. Geoff’s
got such charm and such ability and he asks the right questions. I think that
as a layman you have to read this. It is a ripping read.’
