Textbook publishing will be hit if exam boards are scrapped in
the UK, an academic publishing consultant has warned.
Graham Taylor, formerly of the Publishers Association and now
academic publishing consultant with The Long Game, said: “If you move to
one exam board, or one exam board for each subject, there is no doubt that
it will reduce the number and range of textbooks that are published.” |

A book about Jimmy Savile is among the titles on the shortlist
for the Gordon Burn Prize 2015, which is dominated by books published by
independent publishers.
The prize, founded in 2012, champions a fresh, undaunted
approach to writing.
Four of the five titles are published by independents.
Midland by Honor Gavin (Penned in the Margins),
is about three young women who fight to find their feet in the 20th
century, providing a narrative about one Midlands family. |

Five libraries in Southampton will be closed unless volunteers
come forward to run them, it has been reported.
Local councilors have been consulting on the plans since last
year to make budget savings and will vote on the report next week.
The report recommends saving six libraries. However, unless
community-led initiatives are formed, five will be closed, along with the
mobile library service. |

A Russian publisher has released a series of books about
Vladimir Putin under the names of a number of journalists, without their
permission, it has been reported.
Moscow-based publishing house Algoritm has released books
purporting to be by the Guardian’s
Luke Harding and the Economist’s
Edward Lucas, among others, in its Project Putin series, reported the Guardian. |

Penguin Random House (PRH) imprint Ladybird is providing a
range of story packs for the Read On. Get On campaign, which wants all children
to read well by 2025.
Ladybird has put together a series of the packs, called story starters, with
children’s characters such as Peppa Pig and Topsy & Tim, to encourage
families to talk to their children about stories and encourage a love of
reading.

Amazon could be on the cusp of launching a grocery delivery
operation in the UK after leasing a warehouse from Tesco, it has been
reported.
Retail Week
reported the e-commerce giant has agreed a 10-year lease with Tesco
for a warehouse in Surrey, which is currently being revamped by Clegg Food
Projects. |

The Maranatha Christian Bookshop, based in Uxbridge, will
close on the 22nd August, because of the “excessive hours” needed to keep
the business afloat.

Ken Follett [pictured], Michael Morpurgo, and Kate Mosse will
be among the writers at the third Harrogate History Festival.
Others appearing at the festival, run in association with the
Historical Writers’ Association (HWA), include Princess Michael of Kent,
Thomas Cromwell biographer Tracy Borman, and Scottish historian and
broadcaster Neil Oliver.
