MAGAZINE BITS AND PIECES

The Monthly is a serious Aussie magazine about politics, society and culture. It has a rather dull two column format but is filled with in-depth articles.

I noticed in the April edition an advertisement calling for entries for the inaugural JOHN BUTTON PRIZE – an Award of $20,000 for the best piece of writing on Australian politics or public policy in the past 12 months.

The John Button Prize will be presented at the Melbourne Writers Festival on August 22, 2009.

Footnote:
The late John Button (pic right - Julian Smith AAP) was Australian Minister for Industry 1983-93, Senator for Victoria 1974-93, and author.

The Economist, April 11-17 includes in its book review pages reviews of no fewer than three titles on climate change, under the heading Meltdown.

In The Spectator 11 April heading their Spring Books section of eight lengthy reviews is a most appealing piece of art by Will Topleyfeaturing a man reading in a library. Do have a look at it if you can. And of course read the book reviews too!
