Cape Catley and Devonport Library invite readers of Beattie's Book Blog to join
poet and reviewer Iain Sharp
to launch Kevin Ireland’s new collection of poems
TABLE TALK
7pm, Monday 7 September, Devonport Library, Victoria Road, Devonport
Any new collectin of poems by Kevin Ireland is an event. Here is his 18th collection, evocative and quotable as ever.
The first grouping in this book takes the form of a conversation between friends. The talk across the table reflects the poet's wide interests. The tone is open and robust - sometimes wry or comic, sometimes sardonic, even grumpy.
Then the wine arrives and with the main course the mood changes. The talk becomes hushed, amused, warm and intimate.
Few New Zealanders have published so widely -- fiction and non-fiction, memoirs and criticism as well as poetry.
Dr Kevin Ireland is one of New Zealand’s most honoured poets. He has received numerous awards and fellowships, including the Montana Award for History and Biography, the National Book Award for Poetry and the Prime Minister's Award for Poetry. His honours include an OBE for services to literature.
Kevin Ireland lives in Devonport and is a patron of Devonport Library. He remains a keen fly fisherman.
