QUESTIONS OF TRAVEL - Michelle de Kretser stars at Auckland Writers Festival

She came , she saw she conquered.

A packed audience were entranced by noted Australian/Sri Lankan writer Michelle de Kretser this morning as she had an interesting, personal and  professionally revealing discussion with the NZ Listener's Books & Arts Editor Guy Somerset.

Michelle has been lauded by Hilary Mantel for her formidable technique and by others for her ability to dazzle. Her latest novel is Questions of Travel, a work which charts the very different lives of an Australian woman and a Sri Lankan man. Exploring issues of connection and isolation, the novel garnered her the 2013 Miles Franklin Award, the Australian Literature Society Gold Medal (ALS Gold Medal), and the 2013 Prime Minister’s Literary Award for fiction. Prior to becoming a full-time writer she worked  as an editor in book publishing

Two of her quotes I especially enjoyed:

Distance & time are very good editors.

Fiction is  far more satisfying than real life.

Supported by the Australia Council for the Arts.
