Please join us as Emeritus Professor David Mackay launches an important piece of literary history: ‘I think I am becoming a New Zealander’: Letters of J.C. Beaglehole edited by Tim Beaglehole.
The function will also mark the handover of the remaining Beaglehole papers to the Alexander Turnbull Library.
Thursday 7 November, 6pm Turnbull Library Foyer, First floor, National Library, 70 Molesworth St, Wellington. Refreshments will be served.
J.C. Beaglehole, historian and Cook scholar, was also a passionate writer of letters. He wrote frequently, at length and throughout his life, to family, friends and colleagues – wittily, affectionately, intimately, eruditely, acerbically, and always with an eye to style. This selection has been made by his son and biographer, Emeritus Professor Tim Beaglehole.
‘I think I am becoming a New Zealander’: Letters of J.C. Beaglehole will be available for purchase on the night courtesy of VicBooks. $80, hardback.

I used to mow Professor Beaglehole's lawns for pocket money in Karori when I was at high school between 1971 and 1973 - he introduced me to the whole subject of 18th century mariner-explorers.
