The
New Zealand Vegetarian Society welcomed Simon and Alison Holst last night as
guests of honour at the society’s annual Christmas function in Auckland, to
tie-in with newly published book, The Ultimate Vegetarian Collection.
Passionate
veggies clutched dog-eared Alison Holst books, well-loved and used, eager for
the food doyenne to sign their cookery manuals. This included Alison’s earlierl
books written with son, Simon, the Very Easy Vegetarian Cookbook and Meals
without Meat, the latter being one of the first New Zealand focused titles
aimed at catering for vegetarians, which has sold in excess of 250,000 copies.
Alison
and Simon gave a simple summer recipe demo from their new book, Cheese
Burritos, with a few simple additions to jazz up the menu. Simon and Alison
informally recounted cooking tips and stories of catering for vegetarian family
and friends over the years – including Simon having to make his own flour
tortillas 25 years ago for a Mexican themed night – as these now staple items
weren’t sold in the supermarkets back then.
Questions
were answered and the Holsts’s contribution to vegetarian cooking was acknowledged
by the Society and members there who were able to meet and mingle with the
mother/son duo, who continue to produce accessible cookbooks for our New
Zealand market.
The
Ultimate Vegetarian Collection is published by New Holland and retails at $55.00
