Welcome to the Big Reveal: The Ubud Writers & Readers Festival 2011 Unveiled

Festival dates are 5-9 October and now the waiting is over: all the riches of the Ubud Writers & Readers Festival, at Bali’s cultural heart, are revealed.
Said Festival founder & director Janet de Neefe “The main program is proving a hit with our ticket buyers: four day passes are selling around twice the rate of 2010. People realize that this is the way to ensure you see every single writer featured and get full access to all main program events. Of course,  you could opt for a one day pass, but how do you choose which day?”
And featuring:
The dazzling range of feature events are the fragrant, spicy extras that give the Ubud Writers and Readers Festival its flavour. It’s the perfect way to discover Ubud’s unique and diverse culinary charm by day and the sumptuous range of cocktails and dinners give the Festival its sparkling glamour by night. Tickets are limited in every case and Janet cautions “These events always sell quickly. There are items to suit every budget and desire, located in Ubud’s most spectacular high end resorts and restaurants or quaint bars and cafes tucked away in flower scented gardens and down candlelit pathways.”

Eight years old and bristling with over one hundred and thirty fabulous writers, the Festival combines the newest of the new mingling with writers at the peak of their careers. Hear voices from Indonesia, Cuba, Egypt and the US, from Columbia, Denmark, the Netherlands and the UK. Pakistan, New Zealand, Ireland and Australia: all are represented.
And more: over thirty nationalities exploring the Festival’s theme: cultivate the land within . In Janet de Neefe’s words: “the program celebrates diversity of thought and ethnicity and fosters greater public awareness and understanding of writing, cultures and issues in this region.

This year we have brought thirty eight Indonesian writers to the stage, in company with literary figures such as DBC Pierre (pic left), Tariq Ali, Oya Baydar, Janice Y K Lee, Alex Miller, Daniyal Mueenuddin and Alexander McCall Smith. It’s a truism, but never more applicable: the Festival caters to all tastes.
On behalf of our entire community of writers, I invite you to open your hearts and minds and allow the Ubud Writers & Readers Festival to cultivate the land within.
