Two Poets Win 'Genius Grants'
This year's MacArthur fellows have been chosen, with the $500,000 “genius grant” going to a selection of 22 scientists, scholars, artists, and activists. Among the recipients of the no-strings-attached prize are two poets, Kay Ryan of California and A.E. Stallings of Greece; Jad Abumrad, the 38-year-old producer of “Radiolab” on WNYC in New York; and Shwetak Patel, a 29-year-old computer scientist at the University of Washington, Seattle, who invented an inexpensive sensor system for households to monitor energy usage. Other recipients include a sports trainer who works on treatments for concussions, two poets, two historians, a cellist, and a civil rights lawyer who combats elder abuse.
