Vintage to set illustrated Hare out of the traps

05.09.11 | Charlotte Williams - The Bookseller

Chatto & Windus will publish an illustrated edition of its bestselling The Hare with Amber Eyes by Galaxy New Writer of the Year 2010 Edmund de Waal, hoping to attract Christmas gift buyers.
The book will include more than 100 full-colour images, including photographs from de Waal's family archives and pictures of the netsuke collection—his great-uncle's collection of Japanese wood and ivory carvings which are at the centre of the book—that have not been seen before publicly. Vintage Digital will also be releasing a bespoke colour e-book.
The hardback and colour e-book will be published on 3rd November, with each edition priced £25.
Chatto & Windus publisher Clara Farmer said: "From the moment we first published the Hare, fans have been clamouring for more illustrations—and readers have also written to Edmund pleading to have sight of more of the netsuke. We are delighted to be responding to these requests with this glorious new edition, which brings the story to life in an entirely new way." She called it a "gloriously sumptuous reading experience and the perfect gift."
Ahead of publication, readers will be able to see multi-view images of the netsuke and download an exclusive online reading guide with additional material for reading groups, and an author interview, from the Vintage site.
