Associate Professor of History at Victoria University,
Jim will speak about his recent book
Judgements of all Kinds: Economic Policymaking in New
Zealand 1945-84.
The
Depression and the Second World War provoked the development, in New Zealand as
in many western states, of policies that emphasised full employment and
economic development.
New
Zealand’s post war economic policymakers are variously criticised for being
unduly concerned with security and stabilisation rather than growth, or, alternatively,
for continuing to emphasise the dependent relationship with
Britain.
Whatever
the merits of such perspectives, post war economic policy is often discussed
without much awareness of the context in which policymakers were operating.
Jim's
work seeks to offer a perspective from the ‘engine-room’ and shed light on the
perceptions, ideas, and competing interests which shaped the views and actions
of ministers and officials in managing a small externally dependent economy.
Jim
McAloon is associate professor in History at Victoria University of Wellington,
where he has worked since 2009. Before that he taught for many years at
Lincoln University in Canterbury.
