Sainsbury's launches Children's Book Awards

Sainsbury’s is to launch its first book prize – the Sainsbury’s Children’s Book Awards.
Publishers will be invited to submit two books to win in three categories; Baby and Toddler, Picture Books and Fiction for 5-9 year-olds, for a shortlist which will be announced in October 2014.

The winning author in each category will claim a £1,000 prize plus the backing and exposure of Sainsbury’s promoting the winning titles in 300 of its supermarket stores in the UK in the run up to Christmas 2014.

Phil Carroll, Sainsbury’s books buying manager, said the company decided to run its own awards as a way of highlighting the very best children’s books to its customers.
“We are really proud of our success in children’s books which has been made possible because of the great relationships we have with our publishers, authors and illustrators,” he said.

The judging panel will be chaired by Louise Ward, Sainsbury’s children’s book buyer and will comprise acclaimed author Phil Earle, award winning illustrator Sarah McIntyre and Sainsbury’s children’s book buying team.

Sainsbury’s book team will be contacting suppliers to let them know if how to enter in the coming days. To be eligible, books must be published between 1st January 2014 and 9th October 2014 and the deadline for submissions is 5pm on 6th June.

Last year, Sainsbury’s won the Children’s Bookseller of the Year at the Bookseller Industry Awards.
