The Daily Male

8 July 1970: Colin Meads plays with a broken arm
When Eastern Transvaal take on the All Blacks at Springs, the
game is ugly from the start, with frequent late tackles, obstruction
and barging. At the six-minute mark, Colin Meads emerges fro...
m
a ruck in obvious pain. After a further 15 minutes, he heads to
the sidelines for some medical advice. It’s only a bruise, he’s told.
His arm is bandaged and he returns to the field, determined not
to let down his team. An x-ray taken after the match shows that
Meads has played 74 minutes with a broken arm, rewriting rugby’s
definition of ‘legend’ forever more.

To celebrate the launch of Rosemary Hepözden’s The Daily Male: A kiwi bloke’s book of days, we’re sharing a daily salute to our magnificent men and their achievements. What were you doing on this particular day? If you’d like to read more, or have just found the perfect gift for Father’s Day, ask for it at your local bookstore.
