There’s a lot more to the
Kiwi bloke than the stereotype would have us believe. On any given day of the
year, our much-beloved Kiwi menfolk have been on the job, excelling,
inspiring, entertaining, discovering, conquering (and occasionally failing)
in an impressively broad range of enterprises.
This collection of 366
anecdotes captures some of the most heart-warming and memorable moments in the recent history of the Kiwi
bloke: the day a former All Black ate 222 oysters; the Beige Brigade won a
famous cricket ball on a TradeMe auction; a Rastafarian MP smashed his watch
as he left Parliament; an Auckland neurosurgeon operated on Rolling Stones rocker
Keith Richards; an idiosyncratic skateboarder coined an unforgettable phrase;
National Party leader got an unexpected mud pie facial; and a cricketer
played on in the face of searing personal grief.
Illustrated with Murray
Webb’s uncompromising caricatures, The
Daily Male is a gift to New Zealand men: a year-long salute to some real
Kiwi blokes.

Rosemary Hepözden began her formal studies of mankind as a student in
the Anthropology Department of the University of Otago. Additional insights have been gleaned during
daily life in the presence of numerous male specimens, including her father,
three brothers, a former husband, her son, and a male cat. Rosemary has
previously written a history of McDonald’s in New Zealand, and a Kiwi
compendium of baby names. She now runs her own business called The Word
Factory, writing and editing books and articles on an ever-expanding range of
subjects.
Murray
Webb has been a prolific caricaturist since the 1970s. His subjects include
politicians, sports people and other newsmakers, both in New Zealand abroad.
