The New
Zealand Book Council presents a True
Stories Told Live storytelling cabaret set against the backdrop of the
National Library Auckland Centre’s latest exhibition Tirohia Mai, Look At Us Now Women in Aotearoa New Zealand.
Eight
speakers will tell true stories from their lives that respond to the theme of
the XX factor. Speakers include the new director of the Auckland Art Gallery
Rhana Davenport, Ted Dawe (author); Dan Salmon (director); Anne Kennedy
(author); Yvonne Todd (photographer); Sandra Coney (women’s health campaigner)
and Dylan Horrocks (graphic novelist).Timed to coincide with the 120th anniversary of women winning the vote in 1893, and set against the backdrop of an international revival of interest in feminism, Tirohia Mai, Look At Us Now is the first exhibition in 20 years to focus on the contribution of women to making New Zealand what it is today and will be tomorrow.
The Book Council’s True Stories Told Live storytelling cabaret is about getting up in a room in front of an audience and telling a story. It’s about celebrating the oral tradition, about not losing focus amongst all that technology; it’s about our own imaginations and that connective inspiration.
This will be an evening of unabashed storytelling, totally unscripted, where you can expect the unexpected.
