CONDEMNED: The Central City Library on Gloucester St will be demolished to make way for a new convention centre.
The project brief for Christchurch's planned new $89 million central city library will be discussed tomorrow as the city council pushes forward with the government's rebuild plans.
A new central library fronting Cathedral Square was included as one of the anchor projects in the Christchurch Central Recovery Plan.
The council is leading the project and has budgeted $60m for it, with another $29m due to come from the Crown and philanthropic sources.
The new library will replace the old Gloucester St library which is to be bulldozed to make way for the city's new convention centre.
Tomorrow morning a special workshop is being held for councillors so staff can outline the project brief.
At that workshop councillors will also be briefed on repair options for the Town Hall and on a proposal to establish a new sports hub at Nga Puna Wai, south of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral site in Curletts Rd.
Plans for the sports hub are still in their early stages but the council is looking at the possibility of bringing together on one site facilities for athletics, tennis, hockey, rugby league and football.
Many of those sporting codes lost their facilities as a result of the earthquakes and have been scouting around for a new home.
