Blackwell’s is set to open its third new bookshop this year. The retailer will open the shop in the former John Smith bookshop in the Institute of Education (IOE) in Bloomsbury, London.
Blackwell's announced it would embark on an expansion of its bricks and mortar retail business earlier this year after closing its library services arm in April and has since opened up campus bookshops at the universities of Derby and Keele.
The new IOE bookshop will open at the end of September.
The store was run by John Smith & Son up until last February and is currently undergoing a refurbishment. It will employ three staff and sell academic textbooks relating to the IOE market as well as monographs and IOE-branded non-book products such as mugs and T-shirts.
Steve Orchard, manager of Blackwell’s in Charing Cross Road, London, will be overseeing the new bookshop project. He said: “It is a great little site and we will be working with the Institute of Education to hold events there. The IOE has been very supportive, they very much wanted a bookshop to be in the building and have been working with us on the launch. They have recently bought Trentham Books publisher so we will be selling those books for them as well. It is great for Blackwell’s to be opening another new shop.”
Blackwell’s announced in May that it planned to expand its store portfolio, starting with a site at Derby University, which was a former Waterstones shop. Last month, the bookseller announced it had won a contract to sell books at Keele University, also a former Waterstones site.
