Former President Bill Clinton and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton have made Pleasantville's The Village Bookstore their new go-to spot for all of their reading needs.
When the Clintons stopped in for some weekend shopping last Sunday, all of the bookstore's copies of Clinton's Back to Work: Why We Need Smart Government for a Strong Economy sold out within minutes.
"They were there for quite a long time," said Roy Solomon, who owns the bookstore along with his wife Yvonne van Cort. "They are a couple of people who seem to genuinely seem to enjoy having people come up and talk to them. They did their shopping and it was really very pleasant and very exciting."
This prompted van Cort to suggest the former president arrange a book signing locally.
"He said he might be able to fit that in," said Solomon. "That was the last I heard about it until yesterday about 2 p.m. I got a call from Random House Publishers' publicity department and they said they had heard from the Clintons and said, 'Let's do it.'"
Solomon quickly placed an order for 700 of Clinton's books, recalling a former signing the president had, which attracted 1,000 buyers.
"That's a lot of talking and signing," he said.
Pamela Thornton, director of the Chappaqua Library, confirmed Bill Clinton will sign books on Friday afternoon.
The Clintons, who live in Chappaqua, have been fans of local bookstores for quite some time, said Solomon. Bill Clinton told the owners he used to frequent the now defunct Second Story Book Store and Borders in Chappaqua. "Of course, that might not be good news for you because our last two bookstores closed," he joked with the owners.
