Is the Booker Prize winner worth reading?

Marlon James won the Man Booker Prize 2015 for his novel A Brief History of Seven Killings

The impact a Man Booker win has on sales is irrefutable, and impressive. According to Nielsen Bookscan, sales can increase from anything between 463% (Hilary Mantel’s Wolf Hall) to 1918% (Howard Jacobsen, The Finkler Question) after a Man Booker Prize win. The clear bestseller out of all the winners is Life of Pi by Yann Martel which has sold more than 1.3m copies. Martel won the prize in 2006, and his novel has since been made into a feature film.

This year’s winner, A Brief History of Seven Killings, is bound to enjoy a sales spike. Marlon James became the first Jamaican-born writer to win the prize yesterday for his book based on the attempted assassination of Bob Marley. With its shocking violence and large sections written in Jamaican patois, A Brief History of Seven Killings has divided readers and critics alike.
