Auckland Writers Festival Announce Schools Programme

2016 SCHOOLS DAYS PROGRAMME EXTENDED

After a sellout event this year, we have extended the 2016 Schools Programme to three days, giving up to 6,000 students the opportunity to celebrate the world of writing, reading and ideas with their favourite authors.

The first writers to be announced include Liz Pichon (England) author of the wildly popular Tom Gates series which has sold one million copies in the UK alone and been translated into 36 languages. Michael Grant (America) author of the internationally bestselling and award-winning Gone series, the BZRK trilogy and now the brand new Front Lines trilogy; John Boyne (Ireland) The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas sold many millions of copies and was made into a popular film. Called 'a small wonder of a book' by The Guardian, it was a moving and challenging childhood fable set in the shadow of the Holocaust; Omar Musa (Australia) a Malaysian-Australian poet, rapper, playwright and hip-hop verse novelist, Omar is a former winner of the Australian Poetry Slam and has released three hip hop albums; Ella West (New Zealand) author of the award-winning Thievessci-fi trilogy for teenagers and her latest novel, Night Vision, won the LIANZA Young Adult Award and the Children's Choice award for Young Adult Fiction at the New Zealand Book Awards.

Every year students travel from all over the North Island and many were only able to attend with help from the dedicated AWF transport subsidy. The programme provides subsidised access to Festival events and all attendees receive a book bag and books to take home thanks to our sponsors and donors. By adding a third day we aim to meet the overwhelming demand and extend the programme’s reach to more low decile schools.

Our Schools Programme is proudly supported by Freemasons Foundation.

These events are held prior to the public festival programme in May and are only available to students via their schools. Tickets will go on sale in February.
