The Lion and
the Bird by Marianne Dubuc, originally published in Canada as Le lion
et l’oiseau, has won rave reviews and sold over 20,000 copies in the US
since its release last year. It has also been published in 15 other countries
across the world. Book Island has recently acquired the English-language rights
for sale in the UK, Ireland, New Zealand and Australia. We are extremely
excited to be publishing this title in hardback in October this year.
With its
magical and soft illustrations coupled with a melodic and heart-warming story,
this picture book is a treasure for both children and adults alike. Both
gorgeous in sight and story The Lion and the Bird is a tale about
friendship, waiting, loneliness and change. It is aimed at young readers aged
three-years plus.
The
Wall Street Journal describes it as poignant and uplifting. Publisher’s Weekly
calls The Lion and the Bird a “remarkably moving and deeply human story”
and influential online blog Brain Pickings demands it shares similar praise to
children’s classic The Little Prince.

Azizi and the
Little Blue Bird by Laïla Koubaa and Mattias De Leeuw
In
this contemporary fairytale inspired by the Tunisian Jasmine or Twitter
revolution, a young boy and an escaped blue bird free their country from the
rule of tyrannical despots.
Azizi
and the Little Blue Bird, a picture book for children
aged five-years plus, explores ideas of freedom and justice and meets the
demand for more culturally diverse picture books in an increasingly
multicultural society. The warm, whimsical line drawings are by one of
Belgium’s most talented illustrators, often regarded as the Flemish Quentin
Blake.
The Lion and The Bird and Azizi and the Little Blue Bird join Book Island’s growing list of carefully selected and beautifully designed children’s picture books from all over the world.
