Wellington events with New York publisher Jonathan Galassi

PANZ News
Jonathan Galassi, the president and publisher of Farrar, Straus & Giroux and author of three collections of poetry and of Muse: A Novel will be the presenter at two special events in Wellington on 7 and 8 September next. One lecture will be on translating Italian poets and the other is Translating the Muse: A Creative Conversation.
The New Zealand Centre for Literary Translation, the School of Languages and Cultures, and Wai-te-ata Press in association with the Embassies of the United States of America and Italy along with the Brisbane Writers Festival and the Melbourne Writers Festival are presenting the lectures.

Victoria University of Wellington’s Marco Sonzogni says “Jonathan Galassi is one of the most successful publishers of literature in the world – the list of Nobel Laureates published by FSG is second to none. He is also a gifted writer – a novelist as well as an award-winning poet and literary translator whose work I have read and reviewed. Indeed, reviewing for The Irish Times his translations of Eugenio Montale – the canonical Collected Poems (1998) and the controversial Posthumous Diary (2001) – gave me the opportunity to meet him in New York and in Milan and stay in touch with him over the years.

“It is a great honour and a great privilege to be able to bring him to New Zealand as a distinguished speaker for the New Zealand Centre for Literary Translation at Victoria University of Wellington.”

To attend either of these presentations held at VUW, contact Marco Sonzogni marco.sonzogni@vuw.ac.nz. Seats will be limited. Unity Books Wellington will also host a Q&A session with Fergus Barrowman of Victoria University Press talking to Jonathan Galassi at lunchtime on 8 September.  More details here.
