Lee Child, the author of the Jack Reacher novel series, reveals his favourite haunts in the Windy City
Why Chicago?
It’s a vibrant, brawny, muscular sort of city, with fantastic museums, history, art, food and music, but it doesn’t have that first city self-consciousness that, for instance, New York has. Chicago sits on the shores of Lake Michigan, which is so huge – nearly as wide as the English Channel at its widest – that it feels like a seaside city. It has fantastic beaches and an actual Second World War German U-boat.
Anything special I should pack?
They say Chicago has two seasons: summer and winter. If you go around Christmas or New Year, take two coats to wear together. In January, it’s unbelievably cold. Your face goes numb within around 20 seconds and it’s hard to breathe.
