At 2pm on Sunday November 12th, at The Howick
Little Theatre matinee performance of Book Ends, the author and the cast will
face some of the real people on whom their characters are based. This is
probably a unique occasion in theatre.
Roger Hall’s play is based on his Devonport coffee group, The Cabin Fever Club, which meets every Tuesday morning and has done for about twelve years. The group is mostly writers and publishers, and all share a passion for books. “They all knew I was writing it, and some came to a public reading of it.” It covers four meetings, spread over four years. The first is set in 2010, when one of them brings back from overseas, a Kindle. They all scoff at it, little realising the impact it will have on their lives.
At the end of the performance, Hall will be invited to receive comments from the audience, including several Cabin Fever members who are coming along especially. So far, no lawyers have been asked to accompany them.
