by Jack Carlson Photography by F.E. Castleberry
Classic British and American style was born on the proverbial playing fields of England—or in this case, its rivers.
A delightful celebration of the blazer – the iconic battle-ware of
oarsmen and -women – Rowing Blazers delves
into the elite world of rowing and the crews that make it legendary. A
sartorial icon with the power to make any wearer inexorably sharp and
devastatingly cool, the blazer is a cross-continental garment of distinction as
much associated with ‘prep’ culture as the Oxford-Cambridge and Yale-Harvard
rivalries.
Collated as a series of portraits, the
rowers, both male and female, are from legendary universities, colleges and clubs
across the world – including United States, Great Britain, The Netherlands, New
Zealand and Australia. Rowers of note include Olympic Gold medallists, the New
Zealand Olympic team, Australian university rowing clubs and the twins
immortalised in The Social Network,
Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss.
Ranging from the understated to the
outright outrageous, the blazers are enhanced by the photographic prowess of
‘prep’ guru F.E. Castleberry and the amusing – often eccentric – anecdotes of the
wearers. Peppered with action shots from The Henley Boat Race and the Olympic
Games as well as historical retellings, the diversity of Rowing Blazers is as distinct as the emblems proudly piped and
trimmed on each rower’s pocket.
