PW Children's Bookshelf - 2013's Biggest-Selling TItles; A Children's Choice Award Controversy

In our annual Facts & Figures roundup, each year has its superstar. For 2011 and 2012, it was Suzanne Collins's The Hunger Games (9.2 million copies sold in 2011; 27.7 million in 2012). In 2010, Jeff Kinney's Wimpy Kid came out on top (11.5 million copies sold), followed closely by Rick Riordan's series (more than 10 million copies sold). The year before, Stephenie Meyer and Twilight reigned supreme (26.5 million copies sold). And 2013 was the year of Divergent.

Judge Hands Down Ruling in
'Julie of the Wolves' E-book Dispute

In a significant ruling, a New York court this week held that e-book publisher Open Road infringed HarperCollins’ copyright with its e-book edition of Jean Craighead George’s 1973 bestselling children’s book "Julie of the Wolves." No damages have been assessed at this time, but the judge has ordered the parties to submit a briefing schedule on potential remedies. more

Children's Choice Award Finalist Stirs Controversy
On March 13, the Children's Book Council and Every Child a Reader announced the finalists for the Children's and Teen Choice Book Awards. Soon after, a number of people voiced concern and "shock" over Rush Limbaugh being named a finalist in the Author of the Year category for his novel "Rush Revere and the Brave Pilgrims." more
