Mid-career commissioning editors, rights people and agents in this area of
publishing: take notice, Frankfurt Fellowships this year are aimed at those
working in the children’s and young adult field. Fellowship criteria has also
expanded this year to include people involved in the digital preparation and
distribution of content for children’s books.
Julia Marshall, a previous Frankfurt fellow, strongly recommends people working
in this field give serious consideration of applying for one of the places
available.
Other Kiwis who have had fellowships in past years include Renee Stead of Stead
& Daughters and Auckland University Press editor Anna Hodge. Anna was a
fellow in 2012, our Guest of Honour year at Frankfurt Book Fair. She rates the
experience as “Absolutely fantastic – anyone who has the opportunity should
push for it! For me the opportunity to meet colleagues from comparable markets
to ours was incredible, as was gaining better knowledge of publishing in
Germany.”
Applicants need three letters of recommendation from the industry, Julia says,
and further information is available here. The application
deadline is 30 April.
Maciej Byliniak, editor and rights manager with the Polish children’s book
publisher Dwie Sostry, a Fellow in 2013, was enthusiastic about the new
development: “The new special focus on children’s and young adult books will
open up a whole new level of networking for participants in this area. I can’t begin
to imagine how incredibly beneficial this will be for them – but yes, I can: it
will be heaven for children’s book publishers!”
