Life After Life sold two-and-a-half times as many copies as the second bestselling book of the week, the winner of the overall 2013 Costa Book of the Year award, Nathan Filer’s The Shock of the Fall (The Borough Press).
Sales of the latter rocketed 355% following its shock win last week — its sales increasing from 2,545 copies in the week ending 25th January to 11,576 last week. Its 9,031-unit week-on-week increase was the biggest from a Costa Book of the Year winner in 10 years—since sales of Andrea Levy’s Small Island (Headline Review) jumped by more than 11,000 copies week on week following its win in 2004.
One-time DJ and former street trader Kimberley Chambers’ Payback (HarperCollins) was the bestselling hardback novel in the UK last week, scoring the East Ender her first ever Bookseller number one. The £12.99 hardback sold 3,261 copies last week and takes over from HarperCollins stablemate Stuart MacBride at number one in this week’s Original Fiction chart.
Chambers has been touring the UK in tandem with Mandasue Heller, whose new book, Respect (Hodder & Stoughton), joins the Original Fiction chart in sixth place.
The Hairy Bikers’ new cookbook, Asian Adventure (Weidenfeld), is the highest new entry in a Hardback Non-fiction chart topped by Roast Recipe Collection (Seven Publishing Group)—a Sainsbury’s exclusive. Eric Lomax’s The Railway Man (Vintage) tops the Paperback Non-fiction chart for a fourth consecutive week while two Minecraft titles—Redstone Handbook and Beginner's Handbook (both published by Egmont)- remain the UK's bestselling children's titles.
In total, £22.6m was spent on printed books in the UK last week—up 2.6% (0.6m) on the previous week but down 8.1% (£2.0m) on the same week last year, when Dr Michael Mosely and Mimi Spencer’s The Fast Diet (Short Books) topped the charts with a 34,703 sale.
