On Thursday, March 2nd,
2013 a stellar crowd gathered at Unity Books Wellington to celebrate the launch of Emma Martin’s debut
collection of short stories, Two Girls in a Boat (published by Victoria
University Press). Despite early-onset- winter temperatures a good hundred
people came to show support, buy the book, and listen.
Fergus Barrowman opened the
night with some words from the publisher. Emily Perkins, author of The Forrests,
kindly spoke about the stories that have been brewing for years. Finally Emma
Martin herself was in high form, making people sniffle back tears with her
account of how the book was written, the time she had put into it and the
support she had been given. She also shared an excerpt from the title story,
which won the Commonwealth Short Story Prize in 2012.
It’s always lovely to see so much support for NZ
literature. Thank you to everyone who came, to Victoria University Press for
having us host the launch, to Emily Perkins for her kinds words, and most of
all to Emma Martin for giving us such a treat of a book.
