Something Lyrical In The
Everyday - Poetry On Cleaning Trucks
|
This year Sydney Writers’ Festival is presenting poetry
somewhere rather unusual – on City of Sydney street cleaning trucks.
People going about their business might suddenly come
across poetry where they least expect it, bringing a bit of lyricism to
the everyday.
There are 11 trucks in total with 19 poems and extracts,
ranging from Rilke, Yeats, Judith Wright, Martin Harrison and Joanne
Burns.
The poetry has been curated by Luke Davies, the 2012 Prime
Minister’s Literary Award-winning poet who will be at this year’s
Festival. Luke chose poems ‘that stop you in your tracks, and are utterly
unlike the advertising copy that litters the verbal landscape’.
More widely this year at Sydney Writers’ Festival, there’s
lots of great poetry. We have two of the world’s greatest performance
poets Kate
Tempest and Anis
Modjani, a range of extraordinary Australian poets,
and the wonderful Dermot
Healy speaks with Luke Davies.
On Twitter? Snap
a photo of a poem on the cleansing trucks that has inspired your day and
hashtag #SWFPoetrytrucks.
