Amazon has opened an India Kindle store on Amazon.com, as well as launching the device for sale at Croma retail stores across the country.
The Kindle Store includes over one million titles, priced in rupees; the retailer is billing it "the largest selection, including the most bestsellers, and lowest prices of any e-bookstore in India". Indian authors including Chetan Bhagat, Ashwin Sanghi, Ravinder Singh and Amish Tripathi are available to purchase.
The Kindle is also being launched at Croma stores, priced at 6,999 INR (£79.99).
“We are proud to launch this new Kindle store for Indian customers—offering Kindle book purchases in rupees and the ability to buy and read the work of many great Indian authors,” said Russ Grandinetti, vice-president of Kindle Content, Amazon.com. “In addition, we are excited to work with Croma to make Kindle available at retail outlets across India.”

This product will launch exclusively in all Croma stores across India at an introductory price of 6,999 INR,” said Ajit Joshi, c.e.o. and m.d. of Croma. “Kindle is the bestselling e-reader in the world and has revolutionised the way people read."
Amazon has also launched Kindle Direct Publishing in the country, allowing Indian authors and publishers who use the scheme to set prices specific to India for their books, and also to receive royalty payments in rupees.
In February, the e-tailer launched an e-commerce site in India called Junglee.com, which allows Amazon and third-party sellers to vend products including Kindles but not Kindle e-books.
