Random House imprint William Heinemann has acquired rights in a unique edition of Ernest Hemingway's A Farewell to Arms, which collects all 29 of the author's endings together for the first time.
Publishing director Jason Arthur acquired UK and Commonwealth rights in the title—to be published as A Farewell to Arms: The Special Edition—from Michael Katakis of the Hemingway Estate. As well as the alternate endings, the edition includes early drafts of other essential passages, the author's own 1948 introduction, a selection of handwritten manuscript pages and the original 1929 cover artwork. The book is published in the US by Scribner.
Arthur said: "A Farewell to Arms is a work of extraordinary power and resonance, and one of the greatest novels of the twentieth century. We are extremely proud to be upholding its legacy with this expertly curated and beautifully presented edition."
The book will be an October hardback, and will later be published in paperback by Arrow and Vintage Classics.
