The Award of Poet Laureate
recognises an outstanding New Zealand poet, who receives $80,000 and is
supported by the National Library to concentrate on their own work, take part
in literary events, and utilise the Poet Laureate blog.
The Laureate also receives a
tokotoko created by Jacob Scott and a stipend of wine from Te Mata Estate
Winery (who began the Laureate Award in 1996 and supported it until 2007 when
the National Library assumed responsibility for it).
Nominations close on 11
August, and the new Laureate will be announced on National Poetry Day, Friday
25 August 2017.
