CLNZ/NZSA Research Grants 2017
Assisting New Zealand Writers’ Research Efforts

In support of New Zealand writers who wish to undertake research for a fiction or non-fiction writing project, the 2017 Copyright Licensing New Zealand (CLNZ) and New Zealand Society of Authors (NZSA) Research Grants will open for applications this Friday 16 June 2017.

Four grants of $5,000 each are available.

Three of the grants are Open Research Grants and the fourth, the Stout Research Centre Grant, includes the $5,000 plus a valuable six-week residential fellowship at the Stout Research Centre (SRC) at Victoria University of Wellington. Giving writers the ability to read and research more, with access to library resources and journal databases that may otherwise be inaccessible, the Stout Research Centre Grant offers a dynamic environment to ensure the quality of research.

Aaron Fox was the recipient of the 2016 Stout Research Centre Grant for his writing project “A Biography of Brigadier James Hargest”, which offers an engaging account of the controversial mid-20^th century military and political leader. Aaron, who hails from Gore, is an established researcher and writer, with many of his pieces published in journals and online media.

Aaron said of his time at the Centre, “the grant was a tremendous confidence boost for the work I’m doing.  Working from the Stout, the access to the archives was truly invaluable as it got me to the centre of the research. If you’re looking for New Zealand history, you have to go to Wellington. Delving into the archives, you never know what you’re going to find.  I found myself in the middle of intellectual debate and working with other people in similar fields can get you involved in really stimulating conversations.”

“The time I spent there added depth to my work and turned my project from black and white to technicolour, it really was priceless and I’m incredibly grateful.”

Aaron encourages anyone that has confidence with their writing project to apply.  Writers of all fiction and non-fiction genres are invited to apply for the CLNZ/NZSA Research Grants.

In 2017, as in previous years, priority will be given to projects of national or significant local interest and/or those that add significantly to the field or genre on a subject.

Applications opened at 9am Friday 16 June and close at 4pm Friday 21 July 2017.
