Halcyon Ghosts. Sam Sampson
I had Sam
reading at Going West some years ago at the urging of Bob Harvey, then mayor of
Waitakere City. ‘You must have him’ Bob declared in his usual subtle and
allusive way. ‘He’s a Titirangi boy – grew up in the hills’.
Well Sam
sent me his first book of poetry. I was struck, not only by the quality and
subtly of his writing, but by the elegance of his self-published book, designed
by his wife Jacinda. He continued to be regular feature of the festival and was
our Curnow reader a few years back.
Now he is published by Auckland University Press – the best publisher of fine poetry in the country; we welcome him reading from his latest collection.
