Representing Kiwi publishing in Taipei & other news from PANZ

PANZ News 5 February

Representing Kiwi publishing in Taipei

Six publishers have headed to the Taipei International Book Exhibition with their lists and two others will be displayed on the New Zealand stand at the exhibition which begins today, 5 February, and runs until 10 February.

Sam Elworthy will represent Auckland University Press and will take part in a Digital Forum on 6 February with an address titled The World and the Island: Diving into Digital from New Zealand. Robert Andersen is there for Wendy Pye Publishing, and Julia Marshall for Gecko Press. Peter Dowling of Oratia Media, at Taipei for the first time, says that as with the Frankfurt GoH year, there will never be a better time to establish the imprint in East Asia than over this year and 2015.

Translated editions of two of David Ling Publishing’s titles will be launched at TIBE following their rights sale for Taiwan and China, Voices of Gallipoli by Maurice Shadbolt and In Flanders Fields by Monty Ingram. David will be there for the launch and to give a talk about the effects of World War 1 on New Zealand.

Random House NZ and Penguin NZ will have displays on the New Zealand stand.

A larger than usual team from PANZ is joining the exhibitors in preparation for our Guest of Honour Year at the exhibition in 2015, with Kevin Chapman leading this initiative; Anne de Lautour, Ka Meechan and David Glover also attending.

Claire Murdoch Joins Council

Te Papa Press publisher Claire Murdoch has joined PANZ Council following Robyn Bargh’s retirement. She takes up a new portfolio called Communications and Networking responsible for the following:
  • Member communications
  • Networking, local and national
  • Publicity and news stories for general media.

Claire says she can’t wait to get involved in her new role. “Publishing is full of communicators and networkers, and I’m looking forward to talking to association members about their ideas and getting their input on these areas, and their own needs.

“PANZ and publishing are currently in a good and exciting place and we need to let a wider audience know this – as well as communicate confidently about the challenges of the changing business of publishing in these ‘interesting times’,” she said.

PANZ President Sam Elworthy is pleased to have another great Wellington independent publisher on Council. “Claire brings great publishing experience and networking, not only here but also internationally.”

PANZ International Conference: top American educator Dan Caton to speak

Dan Caton, the President of Wittel/Morris Strategic Consulting, based in Telluride, Colorado, has been an educator for more than 40 years.

A teacher before he joined the educational publishing world, Dan had management roles in editorial, graphic design, production, marketing, sales, and software and online product development, before serving as President of Pearson Learning Group and McGraw-Hill School Education, two of America’s premier resource providers to schools around the world.

Dan is coming to New Zealand to share his ideas and expertise at a keynote speech for the education programme at PANZ International Conference held at the Mercure Hotel in Auckland on 31 March and 1 April

“PANZ is delighted to be welcoming someone of Dan's stature and experience into the conference programme,” commented Melanie Laville-Moore. “His experience of the education sector in North America is second-to-none and there will be much for all of our membership to glean from his wisdom.”

Dan has also served as President of the Board of the Association of Educational Publishers and on the Executive Committee of the Association of American Publishers. He now advises educators and education resource providers on improving their services to children and teachers in a fast-changing world.

Dan and his wife, Liz live in Mountain Village, Colorado, and enjoy skiing, hiking, and travelling to visit their sons in San Francisco and Shanghai.
