Time Out Bookstore has recently turned 25 and we thought of no better way to celebrate than having our community come together to share stories over a wine (or two.)
It was such a highlight having the founder of Time Out, Sue Lees,(left in green), join us for
the occassion. She brought old photos, her husband Dave wore an original t-shirt
and she gave a wonderful and insightful speech about the beginnings of Time
Out. Wendy Tighe-Umbers, the current owner, also gave an entertaining speech about how she went from working in education to suddenly owning a retail store. Wendy has always credited the success of Time Out to her staff, and this was reiterated throughout her speech. Special mentions were made to Ted Dawe and Justin Brown for approaching the store for events and to the publishers' reps, who took Wendy under their wing and taught her how the book industry worked.
Each of Time Out's three owners (Sue, Joy and Wendy) have contributed and grown the success of our little independent bookstore, as have the enthusiastic staff (who are like a eccentric, bibliophile family), our amazing reps, who are so passionate about the books they are selling, and our loyal customers, who keep coming back and keep our Mount Eden Village thriving.
Our staff have had a heavy shouldered week after the sudden passing our 19 year old part timer Hannah, who died of an undiagnosed heart condition over the weekend. We felt extremely supported by our guests and we marked her memory with a tribute and a moments silence.
