Neil Gaiman will return to the world of American Gods, in which the old gods clash with new in modern-day America, in a short story to be published as part of a new collection next year.

Gaiman revealed in response to a question from a fan that he would publish Trigger Warnings: Short Fictions and Disturbances early next year. The bestselling writer's previous collection of short fiction for adults, Fragile Things: Short Fictions and Wonders, was released in 2006.

"I'm finishing the very last short story of the next collection RIGHT NOW. Everything else has been written: the stories, the introduction, all that … " wrote Gaiman on his Tumblr.

The collection will be published by William Morrow in February next year. The publisher said that there would be one "all-new" story in the collection, Black Dog, "which is an American Gods story", said Gaiman's editor Jennifer Brehl, and which "will be 'unveiled' in the book proper". American Gods, a road novel in which a former convict, Shadow, runs into the enigmatic Mr Wednesday, was published in 2001 and won Gaiman the Hugo and Nebula awards. It is currently set to be adapted for television by FremantleMedia.

Brehl said the new collection was likely to surprise readers next year. "As is usual with anything created by Neil Gaiman, expect the unexpected – Neil's work never fails to challenge, engage, enlighten, and touch readers– and that is true of this treasure box of a collection," she said.
