1988: Sam Hunt mourns Minstrel
Sam Hunt mourns his
dog, Minstrel, who has died in his arms at midday. ‘High noon’, as Sam puts it.
The much-loved huntaway was 18 years old, and for years had travelled the
length of the country for appearances with the rambling poet. Minstrel is quite
possibly the country’s most famous dog: his celebrity earned him his own Best
Western Motels discount card, as well as honorary lifetime registration with
the Porirua City Council. In the TV news, Minstrel’s demise is the leading
item, given priority over David Lange’s sacking of Roger Douglas from the
Labour Party.
