One magic day a little girl uses her rainbow powers and changes a dog’s life forever.

A local Grey Lynn artist Lynn Pronk, has just completed a picture book she has written, illustrated and published about her granddaughter Mikki.  Set in Grey Lynn, Mikki’s Magic Day is  a mainly true story with a few colour changes here and there.   The cats next door, the cockatoo that visits from over the back, the tui and hedgehog etc are all real. It’s a real family story that includes Mikki, her grandparents, her Dad and her uncle’s Staffordshire Bull Terrier dog Chance.

‘Seeing the world through a 3 year old’s imagination has been a real source of inspiration.’ explains Lynn.  When my two sons were little, I had often wanted to write and illustrate stories about them too, but somehow they grew up far too quickly before I realized I had missed important creative opportunities.  Now I’m a grandmother and fully appreciate how important it is not to wait, but to act on your creative ideas as they come to you.
My initial plan was to try and complete just one copy of the book, so when Mikki grew up she could read it to her own children, or perhaps even later, to her grandchildren.  But so many of my friends and family assured me that they would like to buy a copy which gave me the confidence to go ahead and self publish.’
Not only has Mikki been a great source of inspiration to Lynn, she has also contributed some of her artwork to the illustrations, and the back cover (below) was entirely illustrated by her.

Copies of Mikki’s Magic Day are available at Unity Books in High Street, Auckland.
