Beauman wins Encore Award

Ned Beauman has been awarded the 2012 Encore Award for his second novel, The Teleportation Accident (Sceptre).

The prize rewards authors for their second novels, with the winner receiving £10,000. This year's judges were Alex Clark, Kate Summerscale and Sinclair McKay.

The judges said: "We were bowled over by The Teleportation Accident's combination of exuberance and erudition, by its humour and eclecticism, and by its author's evident enjoyment in the act of literary creation. The result is a topsy-turvy historical novel that takes risks with the genre and lives to tell the tale."

The book follows theatre set designer Egon Loesser and his unconventional travels from 1930s Berlin to Paris and Los Angeles in a quest for love.
It was previously longlisted for the Man Booker Prize.

Beauman's first book, Boxer, Beetle (Sceptre) was shortlisted for the Guardian First Book Award and the Desmond Elliot Prize for Fiction, and won the Writers' Guild Award for Best Fiction Book and the Goldberg Prize for Outstanding Debut Fiction. Beauman received a Somerset Maugham Award in 2013, and was named as one of Granta's Best of Young British Novelists.

Beauman said: "For a few years you're a 'debut novelist' (i.e. glamorous youth) and then for the rest of your life after that you're just a 'novelist' (i.e. dusty procrastinator on the fringes of civilization). All my gratitude to the Encore Prize for taking some of the lurch out of this transition and also for investing so generously in the writing of my next book."
Also shortlisted for the award were Steven Amsterdam for What The Family Needed (Harvill Secker); Manu Joseph for The Illicit Happiness of Other People (John Murray); Jonathan Lee for Joy (Wm Heinemann); Jane Sullivan for Little People (Allen & Unwin);and Carrie Tiffany for Mateship with Birds (Picador).
